About the instructor:

Russel Kahn has spent the past 35 years creating and teaching art across the Southwest and New England. Originally from New York City and Cincinnati, he grew up in a multicultural family—his mom was from Tel Aviv, Israel, his dad from Cape Town, South Africa, and his stepmom from Innsbruck, Austria. These diverse backgrounds have shaped his worldview and artistic perspective.

He earned a 120-credit studio diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and a K-12 teaching certificate from Tufts University. While teaching on the Navajo reservation in Chinle, AZ, he completed his Master of Arts degree from Adams State College. Later, he taught at Baboquivari High School on the Tohono O’odham reservation in Tucson, AZ, then switched to elementary art in Vail School District.

In 2003, he and his family moved to Maine, where he taught art in several schools around Belfast, followed by 13 years at Camden High School. In 2020, he returned to the Southwest to teach at Monument Valley High School in Kayenta, AZ, before moving back to Maine.

Russell is currently living in Tucson and teaching part time at Desert Sage High School, Tuc-son Clay Co-op, and The Drawing Studio. He enjoys exploring the arts in many different media but absolutely loves working with various 2D media and working with ceramics, both wheel throwing and hand building. His philosophy of art education is that everybody can express themselves through the arts, no matter what age or background. He enjoys facilitating his students through the processes of the creative arts and helping them realize that finding their voice and taking risks are the most important things about the arts.
